If your idea of the perfect pub is one where you can climb upstairs and go to bed instead of having to Uber it home, then The Buxton may be the place for you. This cool east London hangout is on Brick Lane, amid curry houses and boho cafés in the plucky heart of Spitalfields.

More gastro than traditional pub but the vibe is casual. The burgundy-coloured marble bar wraps around the open kitchen so you can gaze at the chefs while you sip a Seasonal Club and tuck into a small yet sophisticated British-European menu.
Starters could include langoustines smothered in garlic butter and mains of pan-fried hake doused in soupy fish sauce, topped with samphire and served with the creamiest dauphinoise potatoes.
A dessert highlight was the freshly made puffy donuts stuffed with homemade jam. The wine list is mostly European, organic, natural and biodynamic – go for a glass of the pearly Pierre Luneau-Papin Folle Blanche.
Breakfast is all served to the table. You can order an express version – granola with yogurt, sourdough toast, pastries and fruit – or a cooked dish (the potato rosti with poached eggs, ham and mustard mayonnaise was delicious), along with freshly pressed juices and teas/coffee.
